What does stomach cancer treatment in Turkey involve?

Heartburn that will not go away, loss of appetite, unexplained weight loss or anemia: this is often how stomach cancer is discovered, after a gastroscopy. When detected early, it can be cured with surgery.

Stomach cancer treatment in Turkey is provided by specialized digestive surgeons and oncologists in modern hospitals in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir, authorized by the Turkish Ministry of Health. For most patients, it combines chemotherapy before and after the operation with stomach surgery, by laparoscopy, robot or open surgery. A first opinion can be given remotely based on your gastroscopy report, biopsy and CT scan. For surgery, plan on 12 to 16 days in Turkey. The price is set in a free quote, after your file has been reviewed.

TurquieMed organizes your stay: forwarding your file to the oncology team, opinion and detailed quote within 48 hours, airport pick-up, transfers, hotel, interpreter and 7-day-a-week assistance.

The key criterion for choosing well is the surgeon’s experience in stomach surgery: it is a delicate operation, with better results in centers that perform it often.

Why have stomach cancer treated in Turkey?

Stomach cancer surgery is a demanding operation: its results depend directly on the team’s experience and on the number of operations it performs each year. This is precisely one of the strengths of Turkey’s major oncology centers.

  • Recognized surgical expertise. Digestive surgeons in reference centers in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir perform gastrectomy regularly, including extended (D2) lymph node dissection, the international standard in gastric cancer surgery.
  • A collective decision. Every file is discussed by a multidisciplinary tumor board bringing together the surgeon, oncologist, gastroenterologist, radiologist and pathologist, following European (ESMO) and American (NCCN) guidelines.
  • Minimally invasive techniques. Laparoscopic or robotic gastrectomy limits pain, shortens the hospital stay and speeds up the return to eating.
  • Personalized treatment. Tumor analysis (HER2, MSI, PD-L1) points to targeted therapy or immunotherapy when the disease calls for it, and HIPEC is available in specialized centers.
  • Modern, accredited hospitals. Several partner hospitals are accredited by Joint Commission International (JCI) and have intensive care and clinical nutrition units, which are essential after stomach surgery.
  • Fast, coordinated care. An opinion on your file within days, tests and surgery scheduled without a waiting list, and a fully organized stay, with direct flights from most major cities.
Why travel? Stomach surgery is best entrusted to a team that performs it often: that is what makes the journey worthwhile. In Turkey, it is scheduled quickly, in a well-equipped hospital, with a fully organized stay of 12 to 16 days.

What are the causes and risk factors of stomach cancer?

Stomach cancer usually develops slowly, on a stomach lining damaged over years. The main risk factors are:

  • Helicobacter pylori infection: a bacterium that causes chronic inflammation of the stomach;
  • age: most cases occur after 60, more often in men;
  • smoking: which clearly increases the risk;
  • diet: high in salt, smoked or salted foods, and low in fruit and vegetables;
  • a family history: or a rare hereditary form (CDH1 gene mutation).

Testing for and treating Helicobacter pylori, stopping smoking and limiting salt reduce the risk.

What are the symptoms of stomach cancer?

In its early stages, it causes few signs, or signs that look like ordinary digestive problems:

  • lasting pain or burning in the upper stomach;
  • feeling full quickly, loss of appetite;
  • weight loss for no apparent reason;
  • tiredness due to anemia, or black stools;
  • nausea, vomiting or difficulty swallowing.

Rest assured: these signs most often have a benign cause, such as an ulcer or gastritis. Still, see your doctor if they last more than a few weeks, especially after 50.

How is stomach cancer diagnosed?

Gastroscopy and biopsy

A small camera is passed through the mouth, under light sedation, to examine the stomach and take samples. Their analysis confirms the diagnosis and specifies the type of tumor.

Staging tests

A CT scan of the chest, abdomen and pelvis checks how far the disease has spread. An endoscopic ultrasound measures the depth of the tumor, and an exploratory laparoscopy is sometimes performed before deciding on treatment.

The tumor profile

Tests (HER2, MSI, PD-L1) guide the choice of targeted therapy and immunotherapy, especially for advanced disease.

What are the treatments for stomach cancer?

The protocol depends on the stage, the location of the tumor and your general health. It is decided by a multidisciplinary tumor board.

Endoscopic treatment

For some very superficial tumors found early, the lesion can be removed through the mouth during an endoscopy, without opening the abdomen.

Surgery

This is the main treatment. The surgeon removes part of the stomach (partial gastrectomy) or all of it (total gastrectomy), with the nearby lymph nodes, then restores the passage of food. The operation lasts 3 to 5 hours, followed by 6 to 10 nights in hospital.

Chemotherapy

For most tumors, chemotherapy is given before the operation to shrink the tumor, then afterwards to limit the risk of recurrence: usually 4 cycles before and 4 cycles after, every 2 weeks.

HIPEC

For some patients whose cancer also affects the peritoneum, the membrane lining the abdomen, to a limited extent, complete surgery can be combined with HIPEC: chemotherapy heated to 42 °C bathes the abdomen during the operation. It is reserved for carefully selected cases, in specialized centers.

Targeted therapy and immunotherapy

For advanced disease, they are combined with chemotherapy depending on the tumor profile, for example an anti-HER2 treatment for HER2-positive tumors.

How does your treatment in Turkey work?

Stomach surgery is often performed by laparoscopy or with a robot.

Example for stomach surgery:

  1. You send your file. The surgeon and oncologist propose a protocol and you receive a detailed quote.
  2. Days 1 and 2: arrival and tests. Airport pick-up, consultation with the surgeon and anesthetist, additional tests if needed.
  3. Day 3: the operation. Under general anesthesia, lasting 3 to 5 hours.
  4. Days 4 to 12: hospital stay. Walking from the next day, gradual return to eating, advice from a dietitian.
  5. Days 13 to 16: hotel, results and return. Check-up, tumor analysis results, handover of your complete file, then flight home.

Chemotherapy before and after the operation can be given in Turkey, over successive stays, or close to home with your oncologist: this choice is prepared before you leave.

Follow-up after treatment

Eating

After the operation, you need to relearn how to eat: 5 to 6 small meals a day, chewing well, drinking between meals. Weight usually stabilizes within a few months. If the whole stomach has been removed, a vitamin B12 injection is needed for life, every 1 to 3 months.

Surveillance tests

Follow-up combines a consultation every 3 to 6 months and regular tests, such as a CT scan, in the first years. It takes place close to home, with your oncologist.

What are the possible side effects?

Thanks to laparoscopy and better preparation, recovery is faster today. Most side effects are temporary or improve with a few simple habits.

How to choose your hospital and quote?

A low price is not enough. Ask the hospital these questions before committing:

  • Is the hospital authorized by the Turkish Ministry of Health to treat international patients?
  • Who will perform the operation, and how experienced are they with this technique?
  • How many stomach surgeries does the surgeon perform each year?
  • Is your file discussed by a multidisciplinary tumor board (surgeon, oncologist, gastroenterologist)?
  • Who takes care of a complication, on site and after your return home?
  • What medical follow-up is planned, and with whom?

What a good quote should specify

  • The name of the hospital and the doctor
  • The tests, anesthesia, hospital stay and medication included
  • The number of nights in hospital and at the hotel, and the transfers
  • What happens in case of complication or cancellation
  • The follow-up offered after your return

Also budget for your flight and follow-up consultations. Planned treatment in Turkey is usually not covered by public health insurance: ask your insurer in writing before committing.

Take time to think, and be wary of any offer that pushes you to decide quickly.

Frequently asked questions about stomach cancer treatment in Turkey

How much does stomach cancer treatment cost in Turkey?

The price depends on the stage, the extent of the operation, the technique and the number of chemotherapy cycles. It is usually significantly lower than prices in Western Europe or North America. The exact price appears on your free quote, prepared after your file has been reviewed, which details each step separately.

What are the chances of a cure?

They depend mainly on the stage. Found early, when the tumor is limited to the stomach wall, it is cured in the vast majority of cases. For more advanced stages, combining chemotherapy and surgery has clearly improved results. Your oncologist can give you a precise answer based on your file.

Can you live normally without a stomach?

Yes. After a total gastrectomy, the esophagus is joined directly to the bowel. You need to eat smaller amounts more often and receive vitamin B12 for life, but most patients return to a normal life and a stable weight within a few months.

How long do I need to stay in Turkey?

For stomach surgery, plan on 12 to 16 days: tests on arrival, the operation, 6 to 10 nights in hospital, then a few days at the hotel until the check-up and the tumor analysis results. Chemotherapy before and after the operation lasts about 4 months in total.

Which documents should I send to get an opinion?

Send the gastroscopy report, the biopsy report, the CT scan of the chest, abdomen and pelvis, the endoscopic ultrasound if one was done, a recent blood test, your medical history and current treatments. With a complete file, the team can usually give a first opinion within a few days.

Can I have chemotherapy in my home country?

Yes, this is a common option: chemotherapy is given close to home with your oncologist, and the operation takes place in Turkey between the two phases. This requires good coordination between the two teams, to be prepared before you travel.

Is treatment in Turkey covered by insurance?

Planned treatment in Turkey is usually not covered by public health insurance systems, which generally only reimburse urgent and unforeseen care abroad. Some private insurers and international health plans do cover treatment abroad: ask your insurer in writing before committing, and keep all your invoices and medical reports.
