Why get treated in Turkey?

Turkey has become one of the world’s leading medical tourism destinations: around 1.5 million people travelled there for treatment in 2024, according to the Turkish Ministry of Trade. Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir welcome patients from Europe and the Middle East every year, for very practical reasons.

  • Internationally recognized hospitals. Turkey is among the countries with the most hospitals accredited by Joint Commission International (JCI), the global benchmark for quality of care.
  • Highly experienced doctors. Leading centers perform a high number of procedures every year in oncology, obesity surgery, hair transplant, dentistry and ophthalmology.
  • More affordable prices. For comparable quality of care, treatment often costs two to three times less than in Western Europe, thanks to the cost of living and the exchange rate.
  • No waiting lists. The medical opinion, tests and procedure are scheduled within days or weeks, depending on the treatment.
  • Easy to reach. Many direct flights connect Istanbul to Europe, the Gulf and the Middle East, often several times a day.
  • A major tourist destination. Turkey is one of the most visited countries in the world: depending on your treatment, you can recover in a pleasant setting, in Istanbul or by the sea.
  • A state-regulated sector. Since April 2025, hospitals receiving international patients must be authorized by the Turkish Ministry of Health.

A good choice, but not for everyone

Travelling abroad for treatment requires a complete medical file and follow-up planned for your return. If your condition does not allow travel, or if a treatment cannot be interrupted, stay under care close to home. We prefer to tell you before you leave.

What you need to know for each specialty

Cancer treatment in Turkey

Every request starts with your medical file: pathology report, imaging and treatments already received. The hospital’s oncology team reviews it and tells you what it can offer. Never stop an ongoing treatment without your oncologist’s approval, and keep them informed.

Addiction in Turkey

Depending on the substance, stopping without medical supervision can be dangerous: do not stop on your own before leaving without medical advice. Care is defined after an assessment, and your return home is prepared from the start, with follow-up near you.

Obesity surgery in Turkey

These procedures do not have the same recovery or the same constraints. The surgeon first checks that you meet the medical criteria. After surgery, nutritional follow-up and blood tests continue over time: plan now who will follow you after your return.

Cosmetic surgery in Turkey

Cosmetic surgery is still surgery, with anesthesia, recovery and risks. No result can be guaranteed. Take time to think, ask the surgeon your questions and request a detailed quote before committing. These requests are for adults only.

Dental care in Turkey

The number of trips depends on the treatment plan. Depending on the available bone and the technique chosen, healing time may be needed between implant placement and final teeth, meaning two trips. Ask for this schedule before booking your flights.

Eye surgery in Turkey

Not all eyes can be corrected with a laser: corneal thickness and eye health determine what is possible. Send your latest tests and your current prescription. The check-up after surgery is part of the treatment, as are the delays before flying again.

Preparing your medical trip

Entry requirements
Visa rules depend on your nationality: many countries are visa-exempt for short stays, others can apply for an e-Visa online. Your passport must usually be valid for at least 150 days after entry. Check the official rules before booking. Official Turkish e-Visa website
Insurance and costs
A planned treatment in Turkey is usually not covered by public health insurance in your country. Ask your insurer in writing before committing, and check whether your travel insurance covers complications.
Your doctor
Talk about your plans with your general practitioner or specialist. They will follow you after your return and can point out any reason not to travel or not to have the procedure.
Travel dates
Turkey is on UTC+3 all year round. After surgery, the doctor decides when you can fly again: book a flexible return ticket.

Your questions about treatment in Turkey

Another question? Ask us directly on WhatsApp.

What is medical tourism in Turkey?

It means travelling to Turkey for planned treatment: surgery, dental care, eye surgery or cancer treatment. TurquieMed connects you with a hospital and organizes your stay. Medical decisions remain those of the doctors treating you.

How much does treatment in Turkey cost?

The price depends on the treatment, your medical file, the hospital and the length of stay. A price given without reviewing your file is therefore of little value. The quote is free and specifies what is included.

What should a good quote include?

Check that it names the hospital and the doctor, details the treatment, length of hospital stay, tests, medication, hotel and transfers, and states what happens in case of complication or cancellation.

Will my health insurance cover treatment in Turkey?

Usually not for planned treatment. Public health insurance generally only covers, at most, urgent and unforeseen care abroad. Ask your insurer in writing before you leave.

Do I need a visa to get treated in Turkey?

It depends on your nationality: many countries are visa-exempt for short stays, others need an e-Visa, which is quick to obtain online. Your passport must usually be valid for at least 150 days after entry. Check the official rules before booking.

How long do I need to stay?

It depends on the procedure and your recovery. The doctor indicates a length of stay in your file. Allow time for the check-up before leaving, and choose a flexible return ticket.

How can I check that a hospital or agency is authorized?

In Turkey, facilities receiving international patients must hold an authorization from the Ministry of Health. Ask for these certificates before committing, along with the qualifications of the doctor who will operate on you.

What happens in case of complication?

Every procedure carries risks. Ask in writing, before signing, who takes care of a complication on site and after your return. Also read your travel insurance: many policies exclude planned treatment and its consequences.

Who follows me after I return home?

Your general practitioner or specialist. Ask for your medical reports, prescriptions and the list of check-ups before leaving Turkey. Inform your doctor before you go: it will be easier to see them again on your return.

Can someone come with me?

Yes, and it is recommended for surgery. Mention it in your request: the quote will include your companion for the hotel and transfers.

Let’s talk about your treatment plan

Tell us what you are looking for. If you have medical tests, send them: the first opinion will be all the more accurate.
