Braces or aligners, duration, follow-up from home, retention, risks and price: everything you need to know before orthodontic treatment in Turkey.

Braces and aligners in Turkey
Please note: this information is general and does not replace a dentist’s advice. Only an examination and an X-ray can tell which treatment is right for you.

What is orthodontic treatment in Turkey?

Overlapping teeth, gaps, a jaw that sticks out or is set back: orthodontic treatment straightens the teeth, improves chewing and makes brushing easier. There is no age limit.

Orthodontic treatment in Turkey uses braces (metal or ceramic) or clear aligners. Treatment usually lasts 12 to 24 months. A key point for treatment abroad: braces need adjusting every 4 to 8 weeks, whereas aligners allow follow-up largely at a distance. Aligners are therefore often the most suitable solution for patients who do not live in Turkey. The first stay usually lasts 3 to 5 days. In Turkey, orthodontic treatment costs from €1,200 for a removable appliance, €1,500 for braces and €1,800 for clear aligners.

TurquieMed organizes your stay: forwarding your file to the dentist, opinion and detailed quote within 48 hours, airport pick-up, transfers, hotel, interpreter and 7-day-a-week assistance.

Why have orthodontic treatment in Turkey?

Orthodontic treatment lasts several months: for a patient who lives far away, the choice of technique and the organization of follow-up are essential. Turkish orthodontists offer solutions suited to remote follow-up.

  • Aligners suited to remote follow-up. Clear aligners allow follow-up largely by photos, with only a few check-ups on site.
  • A digital simulation of the result. The intraoral scanner and planning software show the movement of the teeth step by step before starting.
  • A wide choice of appliances. Metal braces, ceramic braces, lingual braces hidden behind the teeth or aligners: the choice depends on your case and lifestyle.
  • Qualified orthodontists. Treatment is led by orthodontic specialists, who define the duration and stages from the start.
  • Retention planned from the beginning. The bonded wire or night retainer that maintains the result is part of the treatment plan.
Why travel? With aligners followed remotely, orthodontic treatment in Turkey requires only a few trips, at a cost often well below that in Western Europe or North America.

Who is orthodontic treatment for?

  • overlapping or rotated teeth;
  • gaps between the teeth;
  • a jaw that sticks out or is set back, or teeth that do not fit together well;
  • a step before other treatment, such as implants or veneers.

In adults, teeth and gums must be healthy before starting. Significant jaw discrepancies may require surgery in addition. For children and teenagers, whose treatment needs very regular follow-up, an orthodontist near home is usually preferable.

For a patient coming from abroad, aligners are often the most realistic choice. With braces, you need to plan regular trips or find an orthodontist near home willing to take over.

How does your treatment in Turkey work, step by step?

  1. You send photos of your teeth and a panoramic X-ray. You receive an opinion and a quote.
  2. Day 1: examination, X-rays, intraoral scan, scaling if needed.
  3. Days 2 to 4: digital simulation of the result, then fitting of the braces or handover of the first aligners, with explanations.
  4. During treatment: photos sent regularly, new aligners sent or handed over at spaced check-ups; for braces, adjustments every 4 to 8 weeks.
  5. End of treatment: fitting of the retainer, a wire bonded behind the teeth and/or an aligner worn at night.

Retention is essential: without it, teeth tend to move back. After your return, a check-up with your dentist and a scale and polish every 6 months keep your teeth and implants healthy. Bring back the reports, X-rays and implant card.

What are the risks of orthodontic treatment?

Orthodontics is a safe treatment, provided you keep up rigorous hygiene and attend check-ups.

Possible effectFrequencyGood to know
Pain, sensitive teethCommon after each adjustment or aligner changePass within 2 to 3 days
Small sores on the cheeksCommon with bracesRelieved by orthodontic wax
White spots, cavitiesPossible if hygiene is insufficientPrevented by careful brushing
Teeth moving againCommon without retentionAvoided by wearing the retainer
See a dentist if you have severe, persistent pain, a wire that hurts or a bracket that has come off.

How to choose your clinic and quote?

A low price is not enough. Ask the hospital these questions before committing:

  • Is the hospital authorized by the Turkish Ministry of Health to treat international patients?
  • Who will perform the treatment, and how experienced are they with this technique?
  • Is the treatment led by an orthodontist, and how does remote follow-up work?
  • How many aligners or appointments are included, as well as the retainer at the end?
  • Who takes care of a complication, on site and after your return home?
  • What orthodontic follow-up is planned, and with whom?

What a good quote should specify

  • The name of the hospital and the doctor
  • The tests, anesthesia, hospital stay and medication included
  • The number of nights in hospital and at the hotel, and the transfers
  • What happens in case of complication or cancellation
  • The follow-up offered after your return

Also budget for your flight and follow-up consultations. Planned treatment in Turkey is usually not covered by public health insurance: ask your insurer in writing before committing.

Take time to think, and be wary of any offer that pushes you to decide quickly.

Frequently asked questions about braces and aligners in Turkey

How much do braces or aligners cost in Turkey?

As a guide, orthodontic treatment in Turkey costs from €1,200 for a removable appliance, €1,400 for children’s braces, €1,500 for braces, €1,800 for clear aligners and €2,000 for lingual braces. The final price depends on the complexity and length of treatment. It appears on your free quote, which should specify the follow-up and retention included.

Can I have orthodontic treatment in Turkey while living abroad?

Yes, especially with clear aligners: follow-up is largely done remotely, by photos, with a few check-ups. With braces, adjustments every 4 to 8 weeks require trips or an orthodontist near home to take over.

How long does treatment take?

Usually 12 to 24 months depending on complexity. Simple cases treated with aligners can take 6 to 12 months.

Are aligners really invisible?

They are almost invisible from a few centimeters away. Small clear attachments bonded to some teeth help the aligners move them.

Which documents should I send to get an opinion?

Send photos of your teeth from the front and side, teeth together and mouth open, along with a recent panoramic X-ray and your dental history.

Is orthodontic treatment covered by insurance?

Adult orthodontics is rarely covered by public health insurance. Some private dental insurers offer a fixed contribution: ask for a detailed quote and an itemized invoice.
